MAMETFEST LECTURES & PANELS

Sunday, December 30, 2007 @ 12:21 a.m.

All events are free and open to the general public.

Introducing Mamet
Saturday, January 19 - 4:00 PM
The Cinematheque, 100 Arthur Street

A visceral lyricist, a playwright of stylized grit, David Mamet moves between the mundane and the absurd, between the profound and the profane with his intensely urban yet poetically heightened language. Join the University of Manitoba’s Robert Smith and Bill Kerr for a discussion of the amazing range of this controversial writer who provokes everything except boredom.

David Mamet: The American Way
Saturday, January 26 - 4:00 PM
Carol Shields Auditorium, Millennium Library, 251 Donald Street

Deception, betrayal and language in Mamet’s plays and films, related to his early life in Chicago and work as a playwright/director. American Buffalo, Glengarry Glen Ross, House of Games and Spanish Prisoner will be among the works discussed.

Ira Nadel is professor of English at the University of British Columbia and the author of biographies of Leonard Cohen, Tom Stoppard and Ezra Pound.

Mamet & Judaism
Sunday, January 27 - 3:00 PM
MTC Warehouse, 140 Rupert Avenue

David Mamet’s views on Judaism, as revealed in his plays and essays, show a remarkable evolution in his thinking. Always a provocateur, Mamet has written plenty to challenge both Jews and non-Jews. University of Winnipeg Theatre and Film Professor Per Brask and WJT Artistic Producer Michael Nathanson take you on an investigation of Mamet’s changing relationship to “his people.”

David Mamet Writes for Children?
Sunday, February 3 - 4:00 PM
The Irish Cultural Centre, 654 Erin Street

Yes, believe it or not, David Mamet has written three plays for children — a contemporary version of The Frog Prince, The Revenge of the Space Pandas and The Poet and the Rent.

Two of these productions are being performed at this festival. Please join us for a panel discussion on Mamet’s take on writing for this age group. We’ll explore the question: what’s different about writing and performing for children?

Staying Inspired In Your Acting Career

Friday, November 9, 2007 @ 03:49 p.m.

After countless auditions and many days, even weeks of no work, how does one keep up the illusion/dream of being a working actor? Well I found this and thought I'd share it with y'all.

Points worth remembering: What do you do when a dream remains elusive?

  • Ask your agents for feedback. It helps ease your state of mind to know that you may have been perfect, but maybe it was something as simple as your height. Trust me, I've lost roles in movies because I was taller than my on-screen boyfriend. Think of each role you don't land not as a failure or rejection, but as a learning tool that has carried you one step closer to booking a job.
  • Never compromise yourself. You will see people booking jobs left and right for the wrong reasons. Stand strong to uphold your morals and values. Though they may seem happy and successful, people who succumb to casting compromises will have short-lived success, and the emotional damage they bring on themselves could be irreversible. Just this week as I was writing this article, I booked a great pilot with promising prospects. The creator, however, wanted me to starve myself and become a size double-zero; I haven't been that size since middle school. I declined the offer; my health comes first. I'm not willing to compromise my well-being for a part in a show, and neither should you.
  • Build a strong network of friends with whom you share common interest. Nothing takes the sting out of an unsuccessful audition better than a group of friends who can empathize with such letdowns. You will celebrate with them in each others victories, and grow with them as actors.
  • Listen to the experts. Not everyone is a teacher, so accept the advice that is given to you, but only take to heart the words of casting directors and agents who have to rely on the perspective of their own professional careers to guide us toward achieving our dreams.

Practical Tools for Writing on Your Feet
Sunday, October 28th 1-3pm
Speaking aloud and actually walking around in the character body of the person you are trying to give voice to can be an exciting way to make text come alive. We will try out a variety of tools to help expand your ability to unabashedly embody the characters that are making their way through you to the page. We will touch on everything from generally how character body influences language, physical rhythm and text rhythm, how to use your own body to help deepen a character’s development, and how to find imagery and text from physical sensation. We will look at these things very concretely- doing specific physical exercises that you can take home to your writing practice.

It's more for filmmakers but when you're an actor any term comes up, you get curious as to what it means , so I looked it up and put it here. It's also for those of you Actor/Writer/Filmmakers out there. Is it similar to breaking the 4th wall in theatre?

Voting has begun....please visit FAME CAST, my (SHELLY ANTHIS ) short film Stockings is in their on-line Short Film Competition. Votes over the next 21 days will determine the Top 50 and continue to the Top 25 on June 23 and so forth with the Top 5 vote beginning August 4 for a Grand Prize of $10,000 to make my next film...

Rick McNair ~ R.I.P.

Sunday, February 4, 2007 @ 02:44 p.m.

WINNIPEG - The local theatre community was shocked and saddened yesterday to learn of the sudden death of director, actor, playwright and friend Rick McNair.

Friends said McNair died suddenly late Wednesday, from an apparent heart attack. He was 65.

Founder of the Winnipeg Fringe Festival during his tenure as Manitoba Theatre Centre's artistic director from 1986 -1989, McNair was also involved in MTC's annual Master Playwright festivals. He last appeared at MTC in 2005's A Christmas Carol and recently directed StoppardFest play After Magritte, which had its final performance Sunday.

In a statement issued yesterday, MTC artistic director Steven Schipper extended condolences to McNair's family and called McNair "a large man with an enormous heart, who was always looking for ways to help others, to inspire and teach, and to share his love of laughter."

This Sunday's closing StoppardFest performance -- a stage reading of Indian Ink at the King's Head Pub -- will be dedicated to McNair's memory.

McNair was artistic director with Theatre Calgary from 1978 - '84 and penned several plays, including Punch & Polly, Chagall, Dinosaurs and Dr. Barnardo's Pioneers. He president of the board of the Manitoba Association of Playwrights and was involved in planning an upcoming fundraiser.

MAP co-ordinator Rory Runnells says McNair's death is a "huge loss" to the community and he expects MAP will also pay a fitting tribute in coming days.

Actions: The Actors' Thesaurus (Paperback)

Ever get stumped for verbs you need when dissecting a scene? Ever have your acting teacher boggle your mind when asking you what you're trying to do in a scene? Well, this book, which I found on Amazon is suppose to have the answers for you, in the form of a reference book for actors. If anyone has it or has heard of it, let me know.
‘Actions’ are active verbs. ‘I tempt you.’ ‘You taunt me.’ In order to perform an action truthfully--and therefore convincingly-- an actor needs to find exactly the right action to suit that particular situation and that particular line. That is where this book comes in…

Children's Theatre Plays

Wednesday, September 27, 2006 @ 04:37 p.m.

I was inspired to see what plays there were for kids out on the internet. A fellow actor was looking for some for her class of young'uns so I went and found only these. There were some others, but the characters were from South Park, and do you want your toddlers spouting off the language they utter?
